The global tourism industry holds a significant position in the world economy, having contributed to the economic development of numerous countries over the years. It not only generates employment and income but also plays a vital role in ecological preservation and the upliftment of underprivileged communities. Consequently, there is a growing recognition that both the quantity and quality of tourism demand well-trained professionals to fill various roles within the industry.

However, the education system in India has yet to accord tourism the importance it deserves. To address this and with the aim of raising awareness about tourism and supplying skilled personnel to the industry, FMS introduced a one-year diploma program in 1988-89. Subsequently, it was realized that the diploma program did not adequately fulfill the need for research and advanced education in the field of tourism.

As a result, there was a necessity to develop an exclusive course dedicated to the systematic study of tourism as a career at the post-graduate level, leading to the establishment of the Master in Tourism and Travel Management by the Faculty of Management Studies at MLSU, Udaipur. The approach has been to provide a clear and comprehensive curriculum that covers a wide range of subjects related to tourism studies.
